The amplite is a light-enhancing technology. It's also utilised in the military for night vision goggles. It can be temporarily blinded if it is overloaded by unexpected excessively intense light sources.

Because of the ghostly green colour of the viewfield, Amplite goggles are known as Spookeyes.

Spears' men of the First Platoon, a company, employed Amplites to retake the base from the mutineers in 2193, successfully repelling attempts to disable them by turning off the lights in a corridor.

Billie and Wilks were later apprehended by marines wearing Amplite goggles while attempting to board one of the transports. Bueller, on the other hand, turned on the floodlights, causing the kidnappers to become disoriented long enough for Billie and Wilks to escape.

It was created to meet the goals of the Marine 70 strategy plan, which called for a cost-effective vehicle for personnel deployment by dropship. The limits and compromises imposed by the necessity to be drop-transportable have resulted in a lighter, less capable vehicle than other APCs now in US service.

The APC, like most ground vehicles, is powered by a turbine-driven fuel-burning engine. Although most engines of this type take oxygen from the atmosphere, military vehicles must be able to operate in a variety of situations, hence oxygen tanks are included.

The APC can travel at a top speed of 50 miles per hour and has a range of 300 miles before needing its fuel and oxygen tanks replaced.

The APC's interior is a sealed habitat, and its Life Support system can keep temperatures and atmospheric conditions normal for seven days in extreme situations. The M577 can carry enough gear to last up to 5 days.

The vehicle is driven by a two-man crew, one of whom is the driver and the other the section commander, and it can transport up to 12 passengers in harnessed seats in a separate passenger compartment. A starboard slide-door and a portside driver's hatch provide access to the interior. The section commander's tactical operations centre is placed at the back of the vehicle.

A 270-degree sensor cluster at the front searchlight provides sensor coverage. A turreted thermal imager, an optic sensor with a magnification of up to 20x, an ultrasonic motion tracker, and a weapon radar with a range of up to 3000 metres are among the other characteristics. Laser absorbents and infrared camouflage are used for stealth, while jamming devices and a decoy launcher at the back of the vehicle, which can also spew particulate smoke as a countermeasure against lasers, are used for defence.

The M577's armament systems are grouped into two categories. The first are two Republic Dynamics Electric RE-700 20mm Gatling guns positioned on the front, each with a 1700-round feed and the ability to fire a variety of bullet types. Another feature is a rifle turret that can be pushed back to the APC's rear side when approaching tight spaces.

A Command Post (CP) is also included on APCs deployed by front-line military troops. The CP features monitors that show the response from the unit's Light and Comm Gear, as well as the members' Personal Data Transmitters. The officer in charge of a Strike Team can use this technology to talk to each member and keep track of what he or she sees and hears, as well as their physical status and relative location. This information considerably minimises command challenges and greatly boosts the efficacy of a Strike Team when employed by a qualified Officer.

The M577A, M577A2, and M577A3 are the three primary types of the vehicles.

The "Daisycutter" was attached to the 1st Marine Brigade on Linna 349 (sometime prior to 2179) in a ground support role. Despite international outrage at the use of anti-aircraft weapons in a ground role, the quad 20mm gatlings proved excellent for chopping infantry formations to shreds. The "This Way Up" signage was a joke to confuse dropship pilots.

This is a hydraulically-assisted steel exoskeleton which combines all the features of a Spacesuit with armored protection; it takes its name from the Hazardous Atmosphere and Radiation Detachment (HARD) Specialists who usually wear it. HARDCore Armor is covered with titanium plate. It functions well in vacuum and in hazardous atmospheres, and can withstand the temperatures of deep space and of lethally hot planetary surfaces with equal ease.

HARDCore Armor is slightly larger than the wearer within, and the total weight is about 600 pounds. Operation and motion are very similar to those of the Power Loader, except that the limbs have been designed to accommodate the range of movement of Human arms, legs, and hands.

There is an internal power supply, which will operate the Armor for up to 12 hours; after that, the rechargeable power packs must be replaced. The Life Support system is designed to protect the wearer for 24 hours, but in emergencies it can be used for up to 72 hours. Since the power supply only lasts for 12 hours, HARDCore Armor is used near a base of some sort; usually an APC or a Drop-ship, where the Armor can be recharged.

The standard infantry armor of the USCM during the late 2170s. Designed to provide maximum protection without limiting the wearer's movement. Derived from the "Cuirassé de combat" of the French Armed Forces. To be used with the M10 Ballistic Helmet.

The M3's shell consists of four layers of protection.

While not strong enough to deflect direct hits with high-velocity bullet fire and HEAP rounds, the M3 armor is effective against most bullet and fragmentation projectiles. Stealth characteristics include rounded surfaces and infrared masking.

The M3 armor consists of two two armor plates encasing the wearer and two shoulder pads. These elements are held together and connected by webbing straps. The pack portion also contains an arch for attaching an IMP. Sensors inside the armor plates relay bio-data to the transmitter inside the M10 Helmet via optic cable. The rear left of the shoulder pads supports the mounting of a TNR light. Additional armor pieces below the chest piece protect the abdomen and genitals. The leg portion of the M3 consists of greaves reaching from ankle to knee, with separate articulated knee sections.

Several variants of the M3 exist. A reinforced variant of the M3, with a thicker outer alloy, providing additional structural integrity and physical armor, while a lightweight issue provides additional speed by incorporating a lightweight composite in the inner layer. A third type features an anti-corrosive coating, protecting the wearer from acid damage.

This is used for terraforming a planet that is inhospitable into environments able to sustain human life. This consists of drawing in the atmosphere, splitting it up into its basic atomic components and releasing the breathable elements while discarding the non-breathable elements as waste products or storing them for use as fuel, industrial cleaning supplies or as raw materials for manufacturing. When the transformation of the atmosphere is complete, the processor continues to monitor the planet's atmosphere and to sustain its composition.

Atmosphere Processors are usually massive volcano-shaped structures, and, depending on the initial atmosphere, several of them have to be installed on a world's surface in order to produce results within a reasonable amount of time.

The first practical application of an Atmosphere Processor was when Weyland Industries installed a prototype at the polar ice cap to reverse the effect of global warming on Earth in Feb 2 2016.

On August 9, 2029, Weyland Industries registered the Atmosphere Processor technology under the patent number 11,280,599.

The first successful transformation of an extraterrestrial atmosphere was completed on May 28, 2039 on the planet GJ 667Cc.

During the following decades, the technology for terraforming and space travel became advanced enough to make the colonization of distant worlds possible, and Atmosphere Processors were installed on many worlds, with the terraforming process period between 5 and 20 years depending on the local conditions and at an average of 8 years by the second half of the 21st century.

By 2070, Capelli Colony became the first manufacturer of next generation Atmosphere Processors.

By the middle of the 22nd century, about 30 Atmosphere Processors were installed all over LV-426 (Acheron), were partially financed and constructed by Weyland-Yutani, and managed to create a breathable atmosphere in two decades. By 2179, the terraforming process was not yet completed. The Atmosphere Processors looked like huge artificial volcanoes and were 1500 meters tall. However, the kiande amedha infested and set up a Hive on Sub-Level 3 of the processor. A recon mission was sent to investigate the communication breakdown with Hadley's Hope was exploring Sub-Level 3 following the discovery of the missing colonists' PDT signals emanating from the Atmospheric Processor. The Marines were ambushed inside the Hive. During the ensuing firefight, the cooling system of the fusion reactor was ruptured. This set off a fatal chain reaction which eventually caused the processor to explode with the blasting power of 15 megatons, seemingly taking everything in the radius of 30 kilometers of Hadley's Hope.

Later in 2179, USCM survivors from the Sephora crash-landed near the ruins of the Atmosphere Processor and set up camp in the adjacent Hadley's Hope colony, which, though severely damaged, had escaped destruction. While traversing the sewers of the installation, USCM marines Winter and O'Neal discovered that the radiation fallout of the Atmosphere Processor's explosion had contaminated the area, causing the remaining original kiande amedha to mutate into the degenerated Boilers.

It is unknown how this relates to the Climate Control developed by the end of the 22nd century.

Daihotai tractor

An 8×8 wheeled civilian ground vehicle used during the late 22nd century, with a 6.59 meter wheelbase and a track of 5.86 meters. Several variants were developed by Daihotai, with the more recent ones being powered by J-160 or J-180 series gas turbines, , generating from 140-150 kw, and can provide velocities of up to 110 km/h on even ground.

The Daihotai tractors were also designed to handle rough terrain and is able to tackle vertical obstacles with a maximum height of 110 meters and to drive up slopes with a gradient of up to 70 degrees.

Each of the four two-wheel bogies are connected to the chassis by two swinging-arm Anderson suspension units. These units are cantilevered at the chassis bearings and sprung internally on torsion bars. Dampening is handled by telescopic shock absorbers, while hydro-pneumatic rams control the whole suspension assembly. A central computer processor monitors the suspension assembly as it travels on rough ground and instructs the rams to alter the configuration of the Anderson units to provide the best stability and traction over uneven terrain. This system can also adjust the ground clearance of the vehicle to account for the prevailing terrain, allowing for clearances between 1.48 and 0.90 meters.

Power is transmitted from the plant to the wheels via a drive train that runs directly through the struts of the Anderson units to the bogies. Each wheel has its own individual independent transmission system which is computer controlled to provide optimum traction; the anti-lock braking system is also handled by the central processor. Road speeds for the Daihotai are typically around 110 km/h, and the off-road capabilities of the tractors are equally prodigious, thanks in part to its ability to tackle vertical obstacles up to 1.10 meters and gradients of over 70%.

On most models of tractor, a fully-enclosed cabin comes as standard. All cabins are self-contained biosystems with life support capability, sealed against poisonous atmospheres, biohazard and low-level ionizing radiation. Cabins are configured around a central living area, incorporating a galley and berths for up to five people. These living spaces are best described as 'utilitarian', although economical use of space does allow plenty of stowage for equipment and supplies. Each central cabin is reinforced by a steel roll-cage and can be sealed fore and aft by a sliding bulkhead door.

Forward of the central cabin is the driver's cab, which can also double as an airlock while traveling in hazardous environments. At the rear of the tractor is a workstation cab, which duplicates the driving controls of the forward cab, allowing the tractor to drive as effectively backwards as it does forwards. It also controls all specialist tools and attachments mounted on the tractor. Options for attachments include (but are not limited to) mechanical diggers, cutters, cranes bore drills, core samplers, spring stampers, welders, waldoes and 'dozer blades. The ruggedness and versatility of the Daihotai chassis allows almost any heavy duty function to be carried out, and its ubiquitousness has made the type a popular purchase for corporate fleet buyers everywhere.

"Wildcatters" of the Hadley's Hope colony used a Daihotai tractor. The Jorden family used one to explore the coordinates of the Derelict given to Hadley's Hope administration in 2179, which resulted in a kiande amedha outbreak at the colony.

Later that year, USCM marines Winter, O'Neal and Clarison used a leftover Daihotai tractor from Hadley's Hope to get to the outer perimeter of the Weyland-Yutani research facility surrounding the Derelict in order to extract the kiande amedha embryo from Clarison and obtain a personnel manifest of the installation.

Exo-Suit

Extinction
  • AvP: Extinction. EA. 2003. Software.

The ExoSuit is a "micro-scale" heavy armor solution, bringing the offensive and defensive benefits of larger combat vehicles to the individual soldier. It is designed for heavy assault in difficult enviroments by combining staggering firepower with a range of integrated protective systems.

By default, the ExoSuit comes equipped with an M103 torrent cannon attached to each arm. These weapons are linked and work together to saturate a broad firing arc with projectiles. When a torrent cannon attacks, it initially fires at a moderate rate and covers a small arc, but "spins up" until it absolutely blankets a large arc with its firepower. Those enemies nor amply protected often lose their full freedome of movement as they struggle to survive the onslaught.

The ExoSuit protects its operator with a suite of integrated systems. First, it has compound multi-layered armor that enables it to deflect lighter projectiles outright. Second, its integrated anti-NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) systems permanently protect its wearer from a range of kiande amedha afflictions, including spores, cysts, virulence, acid scarring, and facehugging. Third, the system is largely impervious to radiation and fire.

The ExoSuit's upgrade replaces the mechanical torrent cannon with an electronically triggered projectile array known affectionately as the "bullet box" - a grid of railguns that come pre-filled with bullets. These railguns can fire simultaneously, and with sufficient frequency to launch multiple projectiles before their predecessors have even left the barrel. The result is a weapon that fires nearly 1,000 rounds a second (rps), a volume of ordinance sufficient to liquefy most targets within seconds.

The ExoSuit's fire rate enables it to suppress and shred large numbers of enemies, making it particularly useful against melee attackers, since they have a hard time closing inside the weapon's attack cone. While it does not fire armor-piercing rounds, the ExoSuit's fire rate is so great that even heavily armored targets can succumb to it, given enough time. Finally, the suit's compound protective systems make it ideal against attackers that otherwise cause side effects on organic troops.

The ExoSuit's biggest weaknesses are its limited speed and maneuverability, byproducts of its heavy protective systems. Also, while the ExoSuit's rate of fire makes the issue less significant than it might be, the suit's bullet's have neither great penetrating power nor long range. A number of enemies are specialized for attacking heavier opponents and can exploit these weaknesses. Also, the ExoSuit's designers have yet to intergrate the ape suit's recent advances towards full acid resistance.

May 20 2028. San Francisco, USA: Weyland labs discover the body's ability to hyper-sleep - the complete cessation of life processes, which can be restarted when stasis is removed.

On July 27, 2030, Weyland Industries earns patent number 12,004,556 for Method and Apparatus for a device that can initiate, monitor and terminate hyper-sleep. Hypersleep Chambers revolutionize space travel permitting increasingly longer, more advanced missions and enabling unprecedented discovery.

Specifications of models manufactured by the corporation during the 2070s included a tertiary backup system of zero-loss lithium ion batteries theoretically capable of sustaining the life of the chamber's occupant for up to 100 years. The Weyland Industries model featured an external holographic display linked to the ship mainframe. Furthermore, the duration of hypersleep could be programmed according to a variety of parameters, such as mission length and the percentage of FTL travel completed.

The Pods monitor and control life support during Jump, and revive the crew target destination is reached or in the event of an emergency. If Life Support aboard the spacecraft is damaged, only the commanding officer will be awakened, and he or she must then make the necessary decisions regarding the future of the crew. The commander must decide how much time will be allotted to each Pod, and may elect to shut down some of them. In general, all Pods will be allotted an equal share of the Life Support, and all will run out at the same time.

MedPods are fully-automated medical diagnosis and surgical stations.

September 1, 2061: Weyland Industries earns patent number 16,572,092 for Method and Apparatus for the first fully-automated diagnosis and surgical station - the Medpod 720i, and the device entered production after the FDA had approved the MedPod in 2070.

By 2091, about a dozen Medpod 720is had been produced and deployed for field testing.

The Medpod 720i was designed to automatically diagnose and treat a variety of physical conditions, ranging from detecting infections and administering concentrated antibiotics to basic treatment of injuries to advanced operations such as appendectomies, laparoscopic ablations and Caesarian sections. Directions were given over a voice input system. The device was mounted on an adjustable titanium base and had an operating table equipped with an airtight operating shield as its central element. An arch structure mounted over the table housed vital sign sensors. Integrated medical devices included computer-controlled robotic arms, a laser scalpel system directed by a 3D anatomical scanner and a liquid spray anesthetic. If necessary, the patient could be fixated with comfortable limb restraints. A major drawback of the MedPod 70i was the fact that it had to be calibrated to a specific gender and the automatic systems would not comply with a gender the device was not set up for. However, one was able to override the gender setting by specifying the request in a gender-neutral manner.

A Medpod 720i was installed aboard the Prometheus during its mission to LV-223 in 2093.

A Sonar unit combined with passive air density sensors, the Motion Tracker is used to provide information about unseen opponents.

A Motion Tracker will indicate the position, size, and speed of any object within 180 feet. The size of object the Motion Tracker is scanning for is determined by the user, down to a minimum diameter of about 6 inches. The frequency and settings must be adjusted repeatedly to filter interference, and operating the Motion Tracker in cluttered terrain is difficult without a good deal of skill and experience.

The range of a motion tracker can vary from up to 20 meters on handheld devices to up to 1000 meters on perimeter-mounted trackers. The method of feedback also varies, from a simple sound-based system to computer displays delivering detailed information about the position and movement of an object. As motion trackers are vulnerable to environmental interference and countermeasure signals, they often are supporting more advanced and fool-proof sensor systems.

The Motion Tracker will not work in vacuum. The Motion Tracker can register movement on the far side of a solid obstacle, but the air flow between the two locations must be unblocked, and the operator's task is made more difficult.

If the operator uses the Motion Tracker successfully, then he or she receives accurate information regarding the number, position, speed, and size of all moving objects within the Tracker's range.

Handheld motion trackers were used on the Nostromo and at Hadley's Hope.

There is the M314 Motion Tracker, a simple surveillance device originally designed for use by rescue and police services.

Commonly issued to all Corporate and military personnel who are exposed to danger, the PDT broadcasts the individual's location. In general, this broadcast is tracked by the computer at the facility to which the wearer is assigned, but the broadcasts use standard wavelengths and can be picked up by any person with suitable communications equipment.

For people in non-security environments, PDT's are surgically implanted to eliminate the chance that they will come off by accident. Military and security personnel cannot afford to have their locations broadcast to opponents, of course, so their PDT's are either incorporated into their Equipment Harnesses or are in the form of wristbands. These PDT's are used only when radio security is not important, and are turned off or removed by most troops if there is any indication that they present a security risk.

In cases where the battle is more or less "civilized", where the two sides are providing good medical care to captives and where there will be a prisoner exchange after the battle, troops leave the PDT's turned off until they are seriously injured, and then turn them on to broadcast their location so medical personnel from either side can find them.

PDTs were used at the Hadley's Hope on LV-426. The recon mission used the mainframe to locate a large cluster of PDT signals emanating from the nearby Atmospheric Processor.. When investigating the source of the signals, a large kiande amedha Hive was discovered where the colonists had been brought for impregnation during the kiande amedha outbreak preceding the incident. Later, Ripley gave her PDT to Newt and used it to locate her inside the processor after she had been abducted by the kiande amedha during the escape to the landing pad.

The Power Loader is a hydraulically supported, anthropomorphic exoskeleton used for varying purposes, including cargo handling and heavy maintenance. It is used for lifting and carrying a variety of crates and equipment weighing up to 2,000 pounds, and is common in both civilian and military use. The military variants equipped with weapons are called Combat Exosuits.

Requires at least a Class-2 license to operate.

Power Loaders have a number of utility tools built into them, including a cutting torch, a spot welder, wire strippers, and other small devices. They are capable of performing all standard operations on normal fittings and fixtures, and are especially useful when installing large pieces of equipment. They can also be programmed to assume control over other equipment in their area, including warehouse doors, loading bay ports, and so forth.

Note that this programming must be done from the control center of the loading area or dock; a Power Loader cannot simply take control of local equipment.

The powerloader is operated by a single person that detects and translates the movements of the operator to its limbs, reinforcing the strength by a great degree and facilitating work involving great weights even in rough terrain.

The Caterpillar P-5000 is capable of handling loads up to 4 tons and was designed to accommodate the movement capabilities of a human, with articulation points at the joints and the hip section. The manipulators can be fully rotated and feature attachment points for various tools, such as a welding torch. The P-5000 also has a gyro-stabilizing system to prevent toppling and can additionally be loaded with up to 250 kilograms of ballast to provide a secure footing.

Jan 29 2056: Weyland Industries earns patent number 15,725,924 for Method and Apparatus for a mechanised exo-skeleton used for lifting and moving heavy objects such as crates and vehicle weaponry. Weyland Industries subsidiary, Caterpillar, develops the Power Loader for commercial application.

In 2179, Ellen Ripley used the Powerloader against the Queen .

Later that same year, Blue Marsalis used one remotely to kill kiande amedha.

This device serves the same purpose as an Orbital Communicator, but is used by Recon Specialists and others who need secure communications. A complete message is fed into the Pulse Communicator by the operator, and it is then transmitted to its target in a single pulse. At the same time, a return pulse can be triggered, which the Communicator deciphers.

This type of communication is almost impossible to trace, jam, or intercept. It only has enough power for a brief broadcast, but it is very small and can be easily concealed; when disassembled, it is smaller than a briefcase. Normal two-way communication is not possible with this unit, but it does allow an agent in the field to transmit vital data to his or her superiors, and to receive periodic orders.

By doing so, it imitates a permanent summer solstice. The renewable energy gathered in the months following the expedition made Peter Weyland his first billion.

The Solstice became a best-selling product. It meets over half the energy needs of colonies galaxy-wide.

Over the following decades, many more such arrays were installed over colony worlds and would eventually provide over 50 percent of the power needed for Earth and colonized space during the 2070s. The Solstice is the sole orbiting solar array used by the governments of the US, UK, Germany, Russia, and their colonies, largely serving military power needs due its unique flexibility in power delivery.

December 1, 2063: Weyland Industries earns patent number 17,900,353 for Method and Apparatus for an antigravity device - spectagraph - that 3D live-maps any foreign terrain using an omni-directional laser, revolutionizing the pre-process of terraforming and developing new colonies.

The Spectagraph is embedded in a hyper-conducting orb shell equipped with an anti-gravity device, allowing it to float and thus traversing virtually any kind of terrain. Additionally, the device is equipped with polymer film bio-scanners capable of detecting toxins and life forms down to 500 nanometers. The Spectagraph sends its findings to specified viewing platforms, such as the HoloTab aboard a ship.

Tthe geologist Fifield's Spectagraphs, nicknamed “Pups”, on the Prometheus are small, localised spectagraphs with limited range which he used to map the Engineer pyramid on LV-223 in 2093.

When operating in vacuum or in a hazardous atmosphere, USCM wear Spacesuits. These fit comfortably over the standard Combat Suit, and have attachments for systems which are too bulky to fit inside the Spacesuit, including Light and Comm Gear and the Equipment Harness. Spacesuits are designed for operations on planets with hostile atmospheres and extreme temperatures, as well as in places with dangerous levels of radiation and in deep space. They have durable thermal control systems, which allow them to be used in the utter cold of space and on the surface of planets with temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit (260 Centigrade). A Spacesuit is designed to support its wearer for 8 hours, but will last for up to 24 hours in emergencies.

If a Spacesuit is punctured in a vacuum, the wearer can survive 00 to 99 minutes as the remaining Life Support leaks into space.

"Terraforming" (literally, "Earth-shaping") is a word invented by Jack Williamson in a science-fiction story Collision Orbit.

At that time, there was nowhere beyond Earth, as far as Earth knew, where they would find environments in which unprotected humans can survive. Terraforming meant that humans could decide whether to leave a planet unaltered or modify it to make it closer to that of Earth. With technologies that have been the subject of much study, terraforming would be feasible for some of the bodies in the solar system. Environmentalists, pointing at the mistakes humans have made on Earth, will have much to protect in this venture.

The general concept of an Atmosphere Processor received its first practical application when Weyland Industries installed a prototype at the polar ice cap to reverse the effect of global warming on Earth. On August 9, 2029, Weyland Industries registered the Atmosphere Processor technology un-der the patent number 11,280,599. The first successful transformation of an extraterrestrial atmosphere was completed on May 28, 2039 on the planet GJ 667Cc.

In 2122, the Nostromo sets down on planetoid LV-426, a world so environmentally hostile that the three crew members who exit the ship must wear full life support suits. By 2179, LV-426 has been terraformed using atmosphere processing equipment to an Earth-like state.
