Summary

armor

The Yautja's equipment is, presumably, their own design, and manufactured under ritualistic conditions. They take great pride in their level of technology, and guard its secrets well. It is considered extremely bad form (a punishable offense as the New Way Devil in 1930 discovered) to leave anything behind on a hunt that might give any intelligent prey a greater advantage.

Hunting amongst star-faring societies that have relations with the Yautja is not advised. The chance that it could start some sort of conflict is often too great a risk. The Yautja are not afraid of it, but war always takes time away from the hunt, which is their preferred pastime. Hunting at distant colonies or member worlds distant from the core of a region is allowed, however.

As with weapons, most of the equipment is given to a Yautja at their coming of age ceremonies. Some equipment, such as battle armor, is only assigned during periods of war or bug harvesting.

The Bio-Mask is one of the main tools used by the Yautja and is directly linked to the Wrist Gauntlet, which controls many of the mask's functions. As well as performing the basic function of protecting a Yautja's head, the Bio-Mask also grants the wearer access to several settings to offer almost unlimited viewing scale to see anything in almost any environment. It also serves as a respiratory apparatus, displays diagnostics, provides audio/visual recording systems , and Incorporates a red targeting Laser Sight used in conjunction with a Plasmacaster.

Some Yautja occasionally use ultrasound, but the audio buffers need to be kicked up to full or the sound will injure the Yautja's hearing.

In 2004, Wolf's Bio-Mask was capable of withstanding bullets, as shown when Ricky tries to kill Wolf by shooting him in the face.

The Bio-Mask's outward design, like their armor, can range from simple and utilitarian to elaborate and decorative.

Note: The Yautja cannot see in the visual spectrum at all.

Vision Modes

A Yautja's Bio-Mask contains systems to enhance their natural thermal vision and provide additional vision modes in other electromagnetic spectra, ranging from low-light amplification (night-vision), infrared (thermal vision), ultraviolet, air density pressure (movement), X-ray, microwave and even vibration scanning as well as featuring adjustable binocular vision and built in magnetometer and geiger counter.

Language Translator

The Language Translator is a program installed in some Yautja's Bio-Masks that allows a Yautja to understand other species' communications/languages.

Vocal Mimicry

Vocal mimicry requires a Bio-Mask to be utilised, and should not be confused with a Yautja's natural ability to copy human speech.

Emergency methane breather

This an auxiliary respiratory apparatus that provides eight hours of methane for a Yautja in the event that their Bio-Mask is unavailable.

As the basic mask worn by lower caste warriors, it does not offer the large spectrum viewing of other Masks. It has head protection and atmospheric support (gas filter to adjust atmosphere gases to a breathable buffer substance).

This breather provides the Yautja with a one-month supply of methane. This pressurized system also keeps the mask firmly attached to the Yautja's head.

They can change their vision, using the buttons on their left Gauntlet or by pressing buttons within the mask with its tusks. The controls are customized by the individual Yautja, and can be changed in a few minutes.

The Mask records all events in a 360-degree view, enabling the Yautja to see playback video in all directions.

When the Yautja is under water, the mask acts similar to scuba gear and utilizes Sonar technology, seeking all sound events tracked, and directing itself to the point of origin.

The mask is not only a functional piece of protection, but also a personal identifier. Each mask is customized by its owner in some way, and is presented with their first set of armor.

Camouflage has been used by Human hunters for years - to become unnoticeable by the target. There are many types and patterns of camouflage, so to hunt successfully, the camouflage you choose reflects the type of hunting you're going to be doing.

Every Yautja becomes invisible via their arm-mounted mechanism. As Peter Keyes explained, it creates a strong field, which bends light around the Yautja - only the distortion of the bend causes a slight visual apparition that is hard to see.

Only mounted or concealed weapons are affected by the cloak. In 2004, when one Yautja fought the mercenaries in Antarctica, he threw a cloaked spear at one of them and, after a few seconds, it became visible.

The cloak only affects vision, in no way dampening sound or reducing the smell of the Yautja. Creatures whose "sight" is not based on reflected light will not suffer (i.e. the Kiande Amedha have no eyes). The special lenses in their Masks also allow the Yautja to see each other when they have enabled their shift suits.

The cloak is usually unstable in water, as getting wet will cause it to short circuit or in environments saturated with particulate material surrounding the wearer such as fog, rain, or dust.

The armor is not heat insulated, so thermoptics can detect a cloaked Yautja unless the surrounding environment is of equal temperature.

The suit is visible using any form of ultrasound based vision (which also hurts the Yautja's hearing), ultraviolet beam radar, or personal radar. It is 90% effective if motionless.

As mentioned, the cloak doesn't mask pheromones. In 1987, Peter Keyes' team managed to capture video footage which showed the cloaked City Hunter through pheromones.

In 2008, the Super Yautja clan has an improved cloak generator. It is more resistant to damage than Classic's cloak, as when Berserker ran into Classic, blue sparks appeared on Classic but not with Berserker. Also, when Nikolai shot at the cloaked Tracker at point blank-range with a pistol, the cloak was not disabled.

Usually, if one kills while cloaked it is a great dishonor. It ignores all laws of fair and honorable hunting, and gives the prey a fighting chance. A Yautja who is discovered doing this is usually banished from the Clan, and is considered fair game for other Yautja. The only exception to this is to "remove" anything standing between the Yautja and his prey, or if the Yautja is attacked by a creature he is not hunting.

The self-destruct mechanism is a standard weapon built into a Yautja's Wrist Gauntlet, usually as a last resort. When it feels that it’s close to death, a Yautja activates its control panel causing the self-destruct to count down.

In 2000 BC, the self-destruct mechanism is used when the three Yautja, on top of pyramid, are battling thousands of kiande amedha and they have no other choice but to self-destruct. This explosion is much larger than that Jungle Hunter's. It is possible that the self-destruct sequence was synced to the other two Yautja's devices.

Jungle Hunter's final explosion in 1987 is huge and destroys a big part of the jungle.

City Hunter tried to activate his in 1997 when he was hanging on the ledge right before Harrigan sliced his arm off.

In 2004, Scar takes off his self destruct device in the Egg Chamber and sets it to go off in a few minutes. Lex Woods and Scar escape just in time and the device destroys everything, causing the surface to collapse.

Wolf activates the self-destruct device in 2004 on a dead Yautja which destroys the Yautja ship.

Medical/BioAnalysis

Yautja hunters carry field medical equipment including solvents capable of cauterising and healing wounds and various serums and other medical devices.

MedKit, Medicomp and Energy Sift

Yautja medical kits includes bladed instruments, fire sources, drugs, powders, and various other items. With these, they are able to cauterize wounds and stop bleeding. They can even extract bullets from their own bodies, albeit painfully. A Yautja with a med-kit and a little time can stop the most serious aspects of their wounds. In 2004, Wolf uses it to heal himself when he's in the cemetery.

One of their technologies is the ability to grow skin back in minutes where the skin is broken, by speeding up the white cell duplication. Another technology is the ability to make the pain stop, using a drug that magnifies "mind over matter" in the brain as well as sending powerful drugs to the required area. A clean way of "stoning".

The Yautja is very strong, so the use of the med-kit is limited to close combat. The med-kit is carried in a holster on the belt. It carries within itself, several tools that are very durable, and portable, looking the size of a spoon, then growing into a dish. The med-kit is normally used once each hunt, and is not relied upon very often.

The Medicomp and Energy Sift serve similar purposes and are best used in conjunction. Use the Energy Sift anywhere at any time to completely recharge your energy stores.

What's usually in the MediKit:

Health Shard

The Health Shard is a Yautja device that works similar to the Medicomp.

Drill, Abandoned Alien

References

  • Predators. 20th Century Fox, 2010. Movie.

These derelict 2 mile long drill machines, having been on the planet for well over a century, most likely belong to the Super Yautja rather than some other race of life forms who visited the planet. The massive rig has a laser cannon-like drill head and huge tank tracks. Its power source is still active.

Due to neglect and the length of time it has been left there, it has been encased in the tunnel which it was digging, the front of the vessel itself leading to a cave network below the surface of the planet. Noland had been living there some time and figured out all the exits and passage ways on the vessel which allowed him to sneak away from Royce and the group to start a fire.

Nikolai blew himself and Tracker up with the claymores, triggering an even bigger explosion within the rig's power source, which sent a fireball through the tunnels up to the surface.
